Bioinformatics is the application of information technology to the management & analyses of biological data. Computer applications are used to collect, store, analyze and integrate biological research infromation. Bioinformatics has emerged as a result of an explosion of publicly available genomic information resulting from the Human Genome Project. The goal of this project was determination of the sequence of the entire human genome The science of Bioinformatics is essential to the use of genomic as well as proteomic information in understanding human diseases and in the identification of new molecular targets for drug discovery.
Many universities, government institutions and pharmaceutical firms have formed bioinformatics groups and associations, consisting of biologists, computer scientists and statisticians.
